Our Mission
About democraZy
We started with a typo. Democracy became democrazy, courtesy of Emma’s frantic typing during our first conversation about the “cool new project the League of Women Voters is trying to put together!” Sure, typos get a little laughter, and this one certainly got a giggle, but we immediately recognized that the word “crazy” captured exactly how many young people experience government today: complex, distant, detached from our needs.
Here’s the issue: youth voter turnout is low, but people misunderstand the cause. It’s not that Gen Z isn’t politically engaged; in fact, we beat Millennials in advocacy, 32% to 24%. The real problem is that young people feel like their votes do not matter. More than that, the Harvard Youth Poll found that only 15% trust the government. Overwhelmingly, young people look at our government and think they aren’t looking out for people like me
So our solution was DemocraZy, the official podcast of the League of Women Voters of Virginia that bridges Gen Z pop culture with voter empowerment. With social media, live events, roundtables, and episodes, our team strives to educate and entertain. But we’re more than some people sitting at microphones. DemocraZy is a movement founded to remind young people that our votes do matter. Being informed matters. Showing up matters. Voting matters. Our voices shape school boards, city councils, state legislatures, and national politics.
